On paper, Flamengo has the strongest group in Latin America, thanks to a major financial recovery during the 2010s that enabled them to use their massive set of supporters to its full potential. But just like their Brazilian counterparts, they can’t keep their best talents, with many people flocking to teams like Chelsea at a very young age.
They were out today to show that they should not be underestimated because of this ‘weakness’, just like other Brazilian teams in the competition. The people like Gerson and Giorgian de Arrascaeta were the key in the role, and played some dangerous passes to anyone who arrived in the box. But with their teammates who wasted those golden chances, they couldn’t complain as a massive defense error Pedro Neto was able to open the scoring for the Blues early in the first half.
The purpose did not reduce their spirit. They continued to dominate, which was an uncomfortable situation for a Chelsea team that was so used to those who kept the ball. At the same time, we were not afraid to push Flamengo High and give them a very difficult time with some rough mistakes all over the field.
It felt that if things stayed in this state, Flamengo could reverse things if they had just calibrated their purpose. That’s exactly what they did, with Bruno Henrique and Danilo scoring back-to-back goals to put the Brazilians in front of the scoreboard.
The cherry above was the como of Nicolas Jackson. On his birthday no less, the striker entered the field in place of Liam Delap at minute 64 and less than four minutes later got a red card after a violent error on Ayrton Lucas.
And then there were three. Young attacker Wallace Yan had a golden chance before the goal and he did not mess up the opportunity to semble Flamengo’s victory over Chelsea in Philadelphia.
- Reece James starts, and so is Malo Gusto.
- A lot of effort from Pedro Neto to win Wesley’s ball and beat Agustin Rossi on the 1v1 to get Chelsea in less than 15 minutes of play.
- Three yellow cards for Chelsea, no one for Flamengo in the first half.
- There is no discussion about Nicolas Jackson’s straight red.
