Grand Forks – Former UND star Jonathan Wys will return to hockey with his hometown team.
Wars are expected to sign a one -year contract with the Winnipeg Jets on July 1, opening free agency.
The news was reported for the first time on Friday morning by Sportnet’s Elliots Friedman and TSN’s Pierre Lebrun. This was confirmed by the jets.
“I am grateful that I return my return to the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets,” Tows said. ‘It is very special to come home and play in front of my family and friends in Manitoba. The jets have been on the rise over the past few seasons and I am eager to join the group and help. ‘
Kevin Cheveldayoff, general manager of Winnipeg Jets, said: “We are excited to add a proven winner like Jonathan to the Winnipeg Jets. It will be a unique opportunity for Jonathan to play for his hometown team.
Wars, 37, spent his entire professional career with the Chicago Blackhawks, which he was to the Stanley Cup titles in 2010, 2013 and 2015.
Wars last played in April 2023.
He has been sitting over the past two seasons on health issues arising from the long -term covid effects.

Wars played in 1 067 NHL matches of the regular season, with 372 goals, 511 assists and 883 points.
He is fourth among all the former UND players in NHL matches (behind James Patrick, Craig Ludwig and Zach Parise), second in goals (behind Parise), first in assists and second in points (behind Parise).
Writs played at UND from 2005-07, which helped the back-to-back NCAA Frozen Fours program.
The 6-foot-2 center is one of Winnipeg’s most decorated hockey players. The Dakota Community Center in South Winnipeg was renamed Jonathan Tows SportsPlex after winning the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe trophy as a play -off match in 2010.
The mayor also got a key for the city during a Stanley Cup parade in Winnipeg in 2010.
Earlier this year, Wys announced that it was committed to returning to hockey in the fall of 2025. He worked with skate coach Boris Dorozhenko in Arizona.
