“Guys were just shocked,” Story said. “Everyone tried to turn their thoughts on it. That was my first question: What does this mean for our season? ‘

It was no secret in the organization that Devers was in conflict with Breslow. But he was also the most productive Hitter Hitter in the American League and rode in 130 runs.

The Sox returned to Ted Williams to David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, and tolerated the protagonists who produced on the board.

But Devers was traded on the same day when he finished Yankees Ace Max Fried.

When the team came to Seattle, the players started getting some answers.

“The game continues. The message was that they believe in us,” Story said. ‘We are not writing this year. It is a team we believe in.

“Obviously, it’s hard to see how it makes us better at the moment, sure. But these are decisions we don’t make. ‘

The story is waiting to see what form that spoken dedication takes. It’s easy for Breslow to say he doesn’t give up the season. But will he support it with action?

“It was a difficult time,” Story said. “It’s hard to lose a man like raffy. I enjoyed playing with him. He was a teammate.

“But those (front office) guys are smart and they have their way of doing things. I’m curious to see what they are doing. ‘

Devers hit a two-rigging homer of Brayan Bello on Saturday as the Giants beat the Red Sox 3-2.

The Sox has been 3-2 since the trading of Devers, with only 14 runs over the five games. Giants Pitchers had a three-holding exclusion through eight innings on Saturday before the SOX scored twice in ninth place.

The series needs help.

Some of the improvements will come internally. Alex Bregman advanced to running when he returned from a tense judge quad. He will have to perform the bases before the Sox considers a rehabilitation assignment.

Masataka Yoshida – Do you remember him? – is also a viable option. The Sox made him warehouse all season and said that Yoshida’s arm strength must improve before he could get from the injured list.

Now he is probably a few days away from a rehabilitation assignment. Yoshida has a .775 Ops over 248 Major League matches. In the worst case, he is a good choice for DH against Rightander.

But a real commitment should be more than activating players from the injured list and hopes David Hamilton can handle the second base.

“I feel like we’ve definitely cleaned up a few things and played at a reasonable level in all aspects of the game,” Story said. “We won a series, even though we haven’t scored many runs yet.”

The Sox scored eight runs against the Yankees over three games and swept that series. They scored five runs in Seattle and took two of three. It can work in the short term, but not over time.

Abraham Toro took second place in place of Devers in four of the five games since the trade and is 1 for 14 in that slot.

Toro is a 28-year-old utility player who is now in his sixth organization, which is a career .226 Hitter. He gave the Sox a lift this season, but he’s not a number 2 hit in a warring team.

“There are a lot of young guys playing,” Story said. “They bring a lot of energy and it’s delicious. But we have to find ways to score and it’s not easy. ‘

Story said the players are about the Devers drama. They went on.

“Decisions were made and we moved forward,” he said. ‘The game continues. I can see how it can be a big distraction, but we don’t let the narrative come to our clubhouse. ‘

“We feel like we have a good team. We know we do. We’ll see what happens. ‘
