The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers and there has been a lot of buzz around Boston ever since.
It’s not shocking. He is a superstar and it is not every day that someone from his caliber moved during a season. The biggest reason for the move certainly has to do with its public refusal to change position and public shots at the Red Sox office.
Boston has a need for the first base and Rafael Devers publicly said he would not fill it. Although this is the case, he has made it clear that he is willing to do everything needed for the Giants. It started a wide variety of emotions in the immediate aftermath.
Boston faced his former Slugger on Friday and before the match, Devers said he would have played the first basis for Boston if it asked in the spring exercise, as shared by MLB.com’s Ian Browne.
“I would say that I posted some good numbers at Boston, and I think I feel that I have earned some respect,” Devers said as shared by Browne. “And I would have asked myself at the beginning of spring practice, yes, I would have played.”
During the spring training, there were certainly a few rumors about the possibility that Boston Triston Casas was trading, but the club did not make a move. At the time, there wasn’t much of a reason for that. Of course, spring training would be nice, but a need did not develop until Casas hurt.
Already with though it is still a seemingly strange situation. Devers is not wrong with the fact that he wanted better communication. Everyone wants it somehow from their employer. But the direct and public refusal also holds out. It seems that a switch – although not well communicated – has helped his teammates, so why not make a move just to prove a point? He will play the first base in San Francisco, so he is clearly capable. This is just a strange finish of an otherwise large Boston career.
