Tampa, fla. – The Rays Pitcher Hunter Bigge was brought off the field in a frightening scene and taken to a hospital after being hit by a nasty ball lined up in the Tampa Bay Dugout on Thursday night.

Bigge was placed on a back board and given an inch before being driven by ambulance to a nearby hospital for tests. He never lost consciousness and was able to talk to the first respondents, Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

In the top of the seventh innings, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman pulled a pitch in the Tampa Bay Dugout at the first base side and hit the ball, a 27-year-old right hand currently on the injured list.

Emergency medical staff quickly arrived to go to Bigge. After a few quiet minutes, as the visible concerned Rays players kneel in the field, Bigge was loaded onto a stretcher and cut off.

After the match, Cash said Bigge was beaten in the face. According to Statcast, the ball left Rutschman’s bat at 105 km / h.

Bigge, on the 15-day injured list with a Lat tribe, received a standing ovation from the Steinbrenner field crowd while loading onto a wagon. The match resumed after a delay of eight minutes, and Baltimore held a 4-1 win.

Bigge was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 2019 amateur concept of Harvard and made his Major League debut for them on July 9 last year. He was traded after Tampa Bay 19 days later with Christopher Morel and minor Leaguer Ty Johnson for all-Star-third Baseman Isaac Paredes.

In 32 career appearances, including one start, Bigge has a 2.51 era and one rescue. This season he has a 2.40 era in 13 relief trips that take 15 innings.
